I grew up on welfare and now I have $50,000 saved at age 28

I grew up on welfare and now I have $50,000 saved at age 28I grew up on welfare and now I have $50,000 saved at age 28I grew up in a three-bedroom apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn, with four brothers, four sisters, and our two parents, who immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic in the 1970s (just picture lots of bunk beds and a constant fight for the bathroom). My parents spoke little to no English, but we all uttered the word welfare often. When my mom had to attend face-to-face appointments at the food stamps office, I would frequently serve as her very official 10-year-old translator.Although we didnt have much, I understood that my life here in the U.S. welches much easier than the one my parents had grown up in the D.R. - after all, theyd had to drop out of school to work on farms and took showers without hot water. And even though I vividly remember using our EBT card at the bodega, I didnt understand what it meant that my family had one. Being a child of im migrants kept me humble and grateful for the little that I did have.Despite all this, it became harder and harder not to compare myself to my peers as I grew into my teenage years. I felt ashamed to be one of the only kids who didnt have a North Face coat, the latest pair of Jordans, an XBOX, an iPod, a cell phone - whatever. I never dared complain to my parents about this because, even though we often talked about money, it welches always within the context of how little we had. (No hay dinero, theyd say, meaning, There isnt any money.) So, like many people, I was never taught to manage my finances. And thats how I found myself still living paycheck-to-paycheck several years out of college. It was 2014, and I was feeling overwhelmed by my poor credit, student loans, and credit card debt. On a whim, while waiting in line at Duane Reade, I picked up a copy of Suze OrmansWomen and Money.I was hooked. It was the first time I felt like I was in full control of my own financial future. S oon after, I came across the research ofDr. Nari Rhee at The National Institute on Retirement Security. She reported that Americans of color have much less money saved for retirement than their white counterparts, regardless of their age and income. This was partially due to workers of color (particularly Latinx workers) being much less likely to have employer-sponsored retirement options, like a pension or 401k. But also, the actual dollar amounts that each racial group saved were radically different. Whereas white households had an average of $111,749 set aside for retirement in 2010 (less than a years salary for a programmer in Silicon Valley), Latinx households like mine saved even less - an average of $17,600. It all sounded too familiar.Immediately after that, I opened my ROTH IRA retirement account, and Ive been contributing the maximum amount ($5,500 yearly) ever since. I also took major steps to cut back on my spending, which has allowed me to accumulate $50,000 - all bef ore my 29th birthday I was feeling so good about everything Id learned that, in 2015, I started my YouTube channel, MissBeHelpful, to spread financial literacy in a fun and relatable way.I honestly believe that employers should be responsible for teaching their employees about the financial options available to them. Schools should teach their students the same. If fruchtwein high schools and colleges require basic courses like biology and math, why not make personal finance a required course, too? It would certainly level the playing field for students who dont have the privilege of learning this information at home. But alas, thats not the way our current society works. So until then, Ive got your back Here are the exact steps I took to save $50,000 in just two and a half years. Read them, then check outmy YouTube channelfor more tips and tricks.1. Leave all credit and debit cards at home so that you have to plan for every purchaseWhen I decided to get serious about my financial f uture, I started by studying my credit card and debit card statements. One thing that stood out was all of the meaningless purchases I was making on a daily basis. The biggest offenses were the constant snacks and drinks Id buy from places like Starbucks, Pret A Manger, Rite Aid, Duane Reade, Walgreens, and a ton of other cafs and delis around the city. I also realized Id picked up a slight shopping addiction after seeing multiple charges from stores like Old Navy, Gap, HM, TJ Maxx, and Target appear on my credit card statement multiple times each week. None of these purchases seemed like much at the time, but they added up to a lot of money over the course of a month. So the first thing I did was leave all my cards at home. That way, I had to use cash and plan ahead for anything I wanted to buy. After just one week, I noticed a huge difference in my bank account. And within a few months, I finally broke my habit of shopping just for fun.2. Make an adjustable monthly budgetThe secon d thing I did was draft a very strict budget that cut out almost everything I was spending money on around that time, apart from bills, absolute necessities, and a few things that made me significantly happier. When setting your budget, its key to remember that you can include anything you want - but you cant include everything you want. You have to decide which expenses that dont qualify as needs are truly important to your overall happiness. For me, things like having my groceries delivered to my apartment, being able to take two or three trips each year (capped at $850 each), getting a massage every few months, and having a little money free to spend on one spur-of-the-moment experience each month (a fitness class or going to the movies, for example) became priorities over going out to brunch every single weekend or hitting up happy hour a few times each week.3. platzset up automatic paymentsAnother thing I noticed when studying my credit card statements was the amount of money I was paying in interest every month - ouch But I did a little research and distitelseiteed that I could cut those numbers in half by paying off my credit cards with a personal loan that had a lower fixed-interest rate. I took out two loans and set up automatic monthly payments for the money to be taken directly out of my checking account come payday. Each month, I owed one payment of $313 on paper, but I always doubled that amount and sent $600 or more. Yes, the payments were high, but having the money taken out right away meant it was never in my account long enough for me to become attached to it. I used Lending Club for the loan process because a friend sent me a referral deal. But other companies like SoFi and Prosper are work just as well. Make sure you get the lowest interest rate offer available and only accept a manageable monthly payment, in case something happens and your income decreases.4. Dont just spend your money - invest itOnce I stopped going to brunch every week end (limiting it to once a month or every other month) and started cooking and packing my meals at home instead of ordering out for dinner or buying lunch at work, the money I was saving started piling up. Initially, it all went toward paying off those two loans I took out to cover my credit card debt, which took about 23 months. After that, I was able to start funding my savings account. Once I hit my savings goal of having three months rent set aside, I started putting the extra money toward my retirement fund ($458 each month) and the rest into the stock market. Thats when your money really starts working for you, because it grows more than it would sitting in your savings account5. Use your time off to generate even more incomeSince I significantly reduced the number of times I went to brunch, the movies, restaurants, and happy hours, I had a lot more free time on my hands. And I used that time to pick up a shift at my gym in exchange for free classes (saving me hundreds of doll ars) and posted YouTube videos about my new money habits. After a year of uploading videos, my channel began to generate income I then added that to my savings plan, which, combined with my ROTH IRA contributions, totaled $30,000 by 2016.6. Explore minimalist living and declutteringWhen I decluttered my finances, I realized that my surroundings still impacted how I was spending money. Oftentimes, I felt like it was necessary to add things to my apartment or change things in order to spruce it up. Then I came across the Mr. Money Mustache blog, which promotes the concept of minimalist living as a way to be more frugal and accumulate money at a faster rate. The less stuff I spent money on, the less stuff Id have, and the more money Id keep. It made total sense to me So I decided to declutter my entire apartment. After selling many belongings that I didnt need or want anymore (and saving the profit), I felt refreshed and ready to make space for my new priorities. Ive continued to save aggressively (50% of my monthly income) and by the summer of 2018 - right before my 29th birthday - Ill have more than $50,000 savedThis article originally appeared on Jopwell.

Laser Experiments to Share with Your Kids

Even the simplest experiments have major potential for trouble if done wrong. The word LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A laser is a device that emits a concentrated beam of photons, which are the basic units of electromagnetic radiation. Electromagnetic radiation is another word for light.A laser controls the way energized atoms release photons and work by focusing the light energy into a narrow beam mirrors are used inside the laser device to make the photons bounce off each other and charge up. Light particles from a regular or incandescent bulb are not concentrated and they scatter out in all directions. Although light energy will behave in the saatkorn way whether it comes from a light bulb or a laser, the concentration of light in the beam of the laser will allow you to see how light waves work. One of the principles you will observe is the Law of Reflection, which states that when an object bounces off a flat surface, the angle at which it hits a flat surface will be equal to the angle at which it bounces away. This angle changes when the surface is not perfectly flat. When a light wave reaches a boundary, like the wall of a container or a piece of glass, it will bend. This is called refraction. When a beam exits on the other side of the boundary (We call this the pass-through beam), the angle will be different depending on the characteristics of the boundary, such as its thickness, smoothness and transparency. Before we start experimenting, youll need eye protection that will shade your eyes, so use large-frame sunglasses or tinted UV ski goggles. Even with that protection, though, dont shine a laser beam into your eyes or the eyes of anyone else. Another note Use keychain-type lasers from a toy or discount store. Green lasers sold in astronomy stores are too dangerous for the eyes. Here are a few experiments you can try. Once you have set up the experiment, darken the room as much as possible.Plastic Bottle Beam. Fill a clean plastic water or soda bottle with water and add a sprinkle of cornstarch. Turn down the lights and turn on your laser, aiming the beam through the bottle. Do you see the beam in the bottle? Can you find the reflection beam and the pass-through beam?Light Bulb Glow. In the dark, aim your laser at a frosted incandescent light bulb. The bulb will glow and have several internal reflectionsReuse Old CDs. Shine your beam over the surface of an old CD or DVD. You should see between five and 13 reflections off the surface, depending on where you shine the laser, how many scratches there a re on the surface and how good your seeing conditions are.Different Glassware Types. reisepass the laser beam through objects such as wine glasses or clear glass vases. How does the beam pass through differently between plastic and glass, smooth and multifaceted surfaces? Can you find the pass-through beam as well as a reflected beam?Characteristics of Lenses. If you have an old pair of eyeglasses, pop out the lenses. Direct the beam through one lens. Try it at several places on the lens and see how light passes through parts that are thicker, thinner and angled. Take the second lens and line it up a few inches away from the first to see how the light wave bends.

3 Facts About Having a Younger Manager at Work - The Muse

3 Facts About Having a Younger Manager at Work - The Muse3 Facts About Having a Younger Manager at WorkWhen I was a kid, my favorite movies led me to believe my anfhrer would always be decades older than me. I thought shed have her own office with a humongous desk and a hand-painted portrait of herself hanging on the wall. And to be honest, that was pretty much what happened in my first few jobs. But then, in the role Im now, I was hired by someone whos not only closer in age to me, but also younger than me. And tell you what, I went into the experience with a few misconceptions about what it would be like. Turns out they were all wrong. Heres the reality1. Your Younger Boss Really Knows Her StuffMy boss is an expert at what we both do. No questions about it. As soon as I started reporting to her, it became clear that I would learn a lot. While it can be humbling to know someone who hasnt been alive as long as you is so much more accomplished, it can also be motivating. If she can le arn this much, this fast, then it means you can, too. 2. There Will Still Be a Learning CurveWith that said, it doesnt mean shes done learning. Even if shes younger than you, youve likely been working longer. And that means that youve picked up some incredibly valuable soft skills along the way.Maybe you have relationships with other teams that your boss doesnt have. Or maybe you picked up some industry knowledge in previous jobs that your manager has never been exposed to. No matter what that thing is for you, its your job to figure out how you can leverage your additional work experience to support your manager. And when you do, dont share your knowledge with the end game of getting ahead. When you step up to help her keep learning as much as shes helping you grow, the promotions will come. 3. You Might Have to Remind People at Your Company That Shes Your BossThe unfortunate truth about having a younger manager is that your co-workers will probably assume that someone else is your boss. When a colleague on another team asks you for a favor, it might not cross their mind to include your supervisor on an email. Thats where you come in. Want to make life easier for you and your boss? Be the person whos always reminding everyone whos in charge (when its applicable, of course). For a long time, I assumed people would catch on- and yet, I seemed to constantly catch them off guard when I mentioned that I had to run it by my manager. Its not the easiest thing to say, Hey, Im flattered you reached out to me, but you should probably include my boss on this as well. But its worth it to find a way to say it if you want to avoid miscommunication or confusion down the road. Because as tempting as it might be to start making decisions without her, youll ultimately do more harm than good. Plus, youd be a complete jerk for letting everyone believe youre making the decisions. As you mayve picked up, there arent really that many differences between an older boss or a younger on e. And while countless people in world history have uttered the words Age is only a number, I cant think of a truer clich.

5 Reasons Why One Way Video Interviewing is an Effective Screening Tool

5 Reasons Why One Way Video Interviewing is an Effective Screening ToolAt Spark Hire we like to share the knowledge. To do this weve decided to respond to Quora questions here on our blog so we can fully answer anything you have to ask. This blog responds to the following Quora questionIs video interviewing an effective candidate screening tool for companies recruiters?Scheduling multiple interviews at a time is challenging enough. However, All Web Leads dialed up that challenge by hiring 100 employees, month over month, for a call center. The customer acquisition marketing business faced a large number of applicants, and the recruiting kollektiv individually screened every single candidate. They relied on traditional in-partie interviews and even phone screening for years. However, recruiter Amy Hargrove and her gruppe knew they needed a better, mora collaborative solution. By incorporating one-way video interviewing, theyre now mora effectively and efficiently screening candidates . As a result, Hargrove has more interview scheduling flexibility, consistency for all applicant processes, and unified collaboration among recruiters and departments. We were able to take a 45 minute scheduled phone interview and replace it with a 15 minute one-way video interview. This change has saved us countless hours in the screening process, and also has given us the insights to only focus our time on the best applicants, Hargrove said. Even if youre not screening 100 candidates every month, scheduling interviews and getting your entire kollektiv on the same page is a major feat. Heres why one-way video interviewing could save your hiring process 1. Creates flexibilityInflexible schedules arent just an issue for your hiring team. Candidates hoping for an interview actively search for other jobs while waiting for recruiters responses. Unfortunately, these job applicants end up waiting longer than you may realize. In fact, a recent Talent Board report, the 2016 Talent Board Nor th American Candidate Experience Research Report, found 47 percent of candidates were waiting two to three, or even more, months for a response from the company post-application. This is a continuous area of missed opportunity for organizations and has become a trend over recent years. Long processes and scheduling conflicts cause candidates to lose confidence in your process and business overall. In fact, nearly four in five candidates (78 percent) say the overall candidate experience they receive is an indicator of how a company values its people, according to CareerBuilders 2017 Candidate Experience study. Why it worksBy using one-way video interviews, All Web Leads filtered through qualified candidates who were serious about the job faster. We are a work-from-home call center that recruits candidates within a 60 mile radius of the office. Each month, I am responsible for hiring about 100 new employees, said Hargrove. Having to meet every candidate in person was a huge time waste r. We also tried adding phone screens to our screening process. They ended up being very time consuming and candidates did not always take them seriously.Allow candidates to take charge of their own scheduling process with one-way video interviews. Offering the opportunity to record convenient asynchronous videos improves the candidate experience and appeals to serious top talent. Allow candidates to take charge of their own interview process.Click To TweetAlso, give your team the freedom to review and provide notes on their own time. This relaxed interview environment will ensure better analysis of candidates. Removing traditional scheduling pressures enhances their ability to effectively measure candidates skills, experiences, and cultural fit with a clear mind. But remember to give a strong deadline. Keeping the time frame short will keep the flexibility in place while holding your team accountable. 2. ConsistencyYou are very aware of the need for a strong employer brand for bot h future and current employees. But maintaining a strong employer brand is impossible without consistency. When your recruiting team uses different screening processes, interview details can be lost or biased. Consistency gives candidates a feeling of organization and professionalism. When your team is on the same page, it resonates outward through your entire brand and creates a positive company image. Why it worksOne-way interviewing ensures consistency. It creates an easy-to-use process in which interview questions can be delivered unifassonly. Then, those questions and methods can be reviewed, applied, and revised again and again. One of the payoffs of consistency is increased teamwork. Because one-way interviewing is recorded, your team can collaborate at their own pace and on their own schedule. This is exactly what made one-way interviewing an easy decision for Hargrove and her team. We love that we have the ability to share our feedback with each other objectively. The team also loves having the ability to alter their interview questions as often they need, Hargrove said. Remember, consistency isnt equivalent to inflexibility. Have your team get creative with interview questions to get the fruchtwein useful answers from applicants. As new hires succeed and move on, adjust questions based on the needs you see evolve for each position. 3. Increases applicant submissionsAs a recruiter, fighting other companies for top talent is the norm. In fact, 66 percent of recruiters say their top challenge is competition for talent, according to LinkedIns U.S. and Canada Recruiting Trends 2017.What makes recruiters jobs even more crucial and challenging? The LinkedIn report also found 55 percent of recruiters in the U.S. and Canada say they expect their hiring volume to increase over the next year. This means reaching out and increasing applicant submissions is more important than ever. Why it worksSome employers worry one-way video interviewing takes the sacred pers onalization out of recruiting. However, its important to remember the technological immediacy that candidates have grown accustom to. In todays world, people want to do things on their own time, from the device they choose, and from any location. Simplifying the early stages of the interview process increases qualified applicant submissions. One-way video interviewing allows recruiters to reach out to candidates beyond their normal talent pools. Traveling issues and scheduling conflicts become obsolete. Once you begin to stream more talent into your application process, you can find more qualified candidates by wasting less time with those who are either unqualified or not fully committed. All Web Leads immediately saw this improvement with one-way video interviewing. Hargrove explained their process, We send every applicant a set of questions to prequalify them. If we find they are a good fit, we send them a link to complete a video interview. We do not advance them in the process unless we determine they are a potential fit from their video interview.Your team is likely used to a set of requirements for finding qualified candidates. As you implement video interviewing, encourage your team to change their mindset and expand their networking reach. Its also important to make it clear in the job post that candidates will be doing a one-way video interview. This will let everyone know that your hiring process will cater to their varying needs. If youre still worried about personalization or getting a true glimpse of the applicants personality, try switching up a few of the questions. Make sure each one not only fits your culture, but will truly tell your recruiting team something important about the applicants cultural fit. 4. Reduces confusionNothing ruins the interview process, for your team and candidates, like confusion. Disorganization elongates the process and makes candidates lose interest in your company. Confusion is a major candidate turn-off during th e hiring process.Click To TweetAccording to the previously mentioned Talent Board report, candidates who had an overall five-star candidate experience were only waiting for a response after applying 32 percent of the time. Over 45 percent of candidates who were forced to wait said they only had an overall one-star candidate experience. Waiting too long for a response creates confusion about the positions status, and an immense amount of unnecessary frustration and anxiety. Candidates arent the only ones who get confused during a drawn-out hiring process. Inconsistent interview processes and waiting too long for feedback from peers quickly results in chaos among your own team. Why it worksAdding one-way video interviewing to your hiring solutions reduces confusion by streamlining the process. Train your team on the new technology to ensure everyone completely understands your new form of screening and hiring. Have fun with training and encourage your team to practice one-way video in terviewing on each other. Not only will they become acquainted with the technology, but also its a great way to build teamwork for hiring collaboration down the road. Communication is key when confronting confusion in the process. It is important to give everyone a hard deadline on when the position will close.Expedite hiring processes by sharing video interviews and feedback immediately. This helps you keep track of where your team stands with each applicant at each step in the review. Of course, unexpected situations arise. In the event there is a delay in the decision process, you can pinpoint the issue and keep everyone on the same page. This allows you to contact applicants if the posted date is expanding to reduce confusion and anxiety. 5. Promotes collaborationHiring for retention is every recruiters goal. The more collaboration there is when hiring, the better your chances are of finding new hires who will stay for the long haul. In fact, the previously mentioned LinkedIn re port found 73 percent of recruiters said their team is key to the companys workforce planning. However, with varying schedules, locations, and time restraints, collaboration becomes a major problem. This can quickly lead to contention throughout your team. Why it worksAs a work-from-home call center, All Web Leads was especially in need of an effective collaboration solution. With one-way video interviewing, they were able to share notes directly in the software. Enhance collaboration by encouraging team members to watch videos individually. Then start discussions based on their own conclusions about candidates. After each person offers their input, everyone can go back and rewatch the interview to further assess, if necessary. This added fail-safe guarantees the most informed hiring decisions can be made.Recruiting technology has greatly evolved over the last decade. Its difficult to make decisions based on what will be most effective for your hiring needs. Heres how to turn that complaint into action

Heres how to turn that complaint into actionHeres how to turn that complaint into actionVenting your frustration about your job can feel good in the moment. Ugh and Arghh you say to anyone within earshot. But complaining at work and rehashing coworker drama does not actually make us feel good, psychology research has found. When you vocalize your frustration, it does not release you from your bad mood - it extends it. You thought you were just harmlessly blowing off steam, but the toxicity blows back in your face. Employees who complained about work made their bad moods worse, one study on employees diary entries found. Employees bad moods lasted up to 24 hours if they gossiped or vented about work drama. These complainers not only felt worse the next day at work, their work suffered too. They showed lower engagement and energy levels. So what can you do in the heat of the moment? Instead of venting just to vent, a new article in Harvard Business Review shows us how we can channel the energy behind a complaint into productive actionInstead of complaining, address the complaintTo stop ourselves from complaining just to complain, we need to address the source of the complaint. Complaining is wasting time and energy that you could be using to solve your problem, business leader Peter Bregman argues in HBR.Complaining is a violent move toinaction. Itreplacesthe need to act, he writes. Let complaining - and the feeling that leads to complaining - be the red flag that it should be something wrong is happening and you are probably not powerless to do something about it.When you are venting about work, you are painting yourself as a powerless victim of circumstance. To address a complaint, you first need to recognize your agency as an employee to make a difference. Thats how you redirect your anger and frustration into something useful. Feel the energy thats riling you up and locate its source. Did someone yell in a meeting? Did your boss just take credit for your work? Then take your grievance to a person who can change what went wrong, whether thats the employee who yelled or the frustrating boss. You tell ansicht colleagues not only how their action makes you feel, but how it is impacting your work.Decide what you can do to draw a boundary, ask someone to shift their behavior, or otherwise improve the situation, Bregman recommends. More than once I have seen someone gain the respect of everyone in the room because they were courageous enough to be direct - caringly, compassionately, and truthfully. The key to this advice is not letting yourself stew in frustration for days on end. When something complaint-worthy happens, address it quickly and directly to nip the bad energy in the bud. Thoughtfully addressing a complaint takes more courage than complaining with your coworker at the bar, but the payoff of your peace of mind will be worth it.

How to Include Your Contact Information on Your Resume

How to Include Your Contact Information on Your Resume How to Include Your Contact Information on Your Resume When youre writing a resume, its important to include all of your contact information at the top of your resume. It allows employers to see how they can reach you easily. Without detailed contact information, or with incorrect contact information, employers will not be able to get in touch with you easily. You want to make it as easy as possible for an employer or hiring manager to get in touch with you. Read below for tips on what to include in your contact section and where to put your contact section, and see a sample contact section for a resume. What to Include in Your Contact Information Section What to include: Include your full  name, street address, city, state, and zip code. Also, include your phone number and email address. If you have a LinkedIn page or personal website, include these URLs in your contact section as well.Name: If you go by a name other than your given name, you can use this in your resume. However, whatever name you choose, be consistent. It should be the name on all of your job application documents, including any cover letters, business cards, professional websites, etc. You might also use your full name, but put a nickname that you prefer to go by in parenthesis. For example, your name on your resume might read: James (Jim) Santinello. Mailing address: Use a permanent mailing address on your resume. If you are a student, you might include both your permanent address and your school address. Be sure to include any important details to your address, such as an apartment number.  If youre concerned about privacy, consider listing just the city and state. For example, your address might read: Tampa, Florida. There are also other circumstances where you may want to consider not listing your physical home address.  Email address: Use a personal email address, not your work email address. You don’t want to mix your current job emails with your job search emails. If you dont have a personal email account, sign up for a free email account to use for job searching. However, also make sure that your personal address is professional. Use your first and last name in the address. Avoid unprofessional email addresses, such as PartyTimeemail.com. Check the email account frequently, so that you can respond to employer inquiries p romptly. Phone number: It is very important to have voicemail on your phone so that hiring managers can leave a message when youre not available. You dont want to miss any important calls. Be sure that your voicemail message sounds professional; also make sure it includes your name, so the employer knows they have called the right person. How to Format Your Contact Information Section Place your contact information at the top of your resume; it should be the first thing the employer sees. Your name should be at the very top and should stand out. You might make your name a bit larger in font than the rest of your resume, or bold your name, or both. You can center your contact information on the page, or make it left justified. Leave a space or horizontal line between the end of your contact information and the next section of your resume. Resume Contact Section Example First Name Last NameYour AddressYour City, State Zip CodeYour Phone NumberYour Email AddressLinkedIn or Personal Website URL  (if you have one) Expand Edit and Proofread Be sure to proofread your contact information, along with the rest of the information on your resume. A typo in your phone number or email address is more common than you might think. It could prevent you from getting contacted for a job interview. Review Resume Examples Before you start work on your resume, review free resume samples that fit a variety of employment situations. These resume examples and templates provide job seekers with examples of resume formats that will work for almost every job seeker.

Turn Seasonal Hires into All-Season Brand Ambassadors

Turn Seasonal Hires into All-Season Brand Ambassadors Turn Seasonal Hires into All-Season Brand Ambassadors Turn Seasonal Hires into All-Season Brand Ambassadors Matuson During the summer and holidays, many companies overflow with seasonal hires , including interns and co-op students. Although their time with the company is short, a positive work experience can go a long way towards turning seasonal hires into all-season brand ambassadors. Here are some tips to get you started. Build a Brandful Workforce Many business owners and hiring managers often make acommon mistake they assume their seasonal hires have a clear understanding of the reason a company is in business. Unfortunately, thats often not true. In a poll, Gallup asked more than 3,000 randomly selected workers to assess their agreement with the statement, I know what my company stands for and what makes our brand different from our competitors. Surprisingly, only 41% of employees strongly agreed. This number is likely to be even lower for those who are hired on a seasonal basis. How can you counteract this discrepancy? Take time during employee orientation to educate employees on your companys purpose and your promise to customers, even if it seems obvious. Consider providing employee training on basic marketing principles to help employees better understand your brand. Employees who understand your brand and know how to deliver on your promise are more apt to promote it in a positive way and become season-long brand ambassadors. Treat Summer Hires as Regular Full-time Workers Some companies treat seasonal help simply as hired hands. Not surprisingly, these hires often do just what is expected of them and little more. Conversely, there are companies that do a terrific job of assimilating their seasonal hires into their workforce and provide them with a truly memorable work experience. These companies rotate the job responsibilities of their seasonal hires so work doesnt become mundane. They provide workers with opportunities to learn new skills and grow as individuals. The results are notable: engaged seasonal employees often return year-after-year and refer other like-minded seasonal workers as well. These workers share their excitement about the company with others, long after their seasonal employment ends. Leave a Positive Lasting Impression All work and no play isnt good for anyone, particularly for seasonal and summer hires. Build engagement by hosting an off-site experience for your employees, such as a trip to a theme park or an Outward Bound adventure to strengthen team building and provide a unique experience. Give your seasonal workers good-looking company t-shirts. Employees will wear these t-shirts proudly that will build awareness about your company wherever they go. Encourage Seasonal Employees to Sample Your Goods Weve all encountered seasonal hires who, when asked how a particular product works or tastes, respond by saying, I have no idea. Take a page from the playbook of Judith Herrell, owner of Herrells Ice Creamin Northampton, MA. Not only are Herrells employees encouraged to sample the ice cream (they can eat free ice cream all day), so are a couple of lucky designated special friends. According to Herrell, Every month, employees can choose two people to be placed on the Special Friends list for a 30-day period. These people can be someones best friends, a family member or even a teacher who they feel is deserving. She goes on to say, The employee or their special friend pays $15 per person for this treat, which allows their designated people to come in once a day and order anything they want from our menu, up to a medium-size Sundae. Stay in Touch throughout the Year Successful businesses make it a point to remain top-of-mind with your customers all year long. Taking the same approach with seasonal hires will help strengthen your relationships with workers and increase your companysbrand awareness. Ice cream shop owner Herrell helps her crew when they are back in school. If they are working on a project, like a school play, we support them by providing ice cream at the event or giving them gift certificates. Her strategy must be working as Herrells has been going strong for 35 years. Here are some other ways to keep your seasonal workers engaged: - Create a company Facebook page and encourage your summer hires to join. - Invite seasonal hires to participate in company volunteer opportunities so they remain connected throughout the year. - Send handwritten notes throughout the school year to remind employees you are thinking of them. - During the holiday season, send some company swag, along with a holiday card, wishing them a joyous holiday. Every connection with your seasonal workers will help strengthen your relationship and increase their willingness to share their brand experience with everyone around them. By giving your seasonal hires a great experience, they are likely to promote your company brand for years to come.

How to Apply for Disability Insurance Benefits

How to Apply for Disability Insurance Benefits How to Apply for Disability Insurance Benefits You might be considering applying for disability insurance benefits if youve become disabled from work due to an illness or injury. Depending on your circumstances, you could be eligible for thousands of dollars each month to cover your personal and health care needs. Disability benefits can provide much-needed cash for paying rent or mortgage payments, for food and utilities, and for ongoing care to make sure you have the best quality of life possible. How to Get Started: Workers Compensation The process of applying for disability benefits starts with your employers or former employers human resource department. Consider how you became disabled  if it occurred on the job, and determine if the injury or illness was directly work-related. If so, you should have already been approved for workers’ compensation coverage and received some level of medical care and benefits, at least for a short period of time. Speak with an attorney to learn about your rights and find out where you stand if you havent been approved for workers compensation. Short- and Long-Term Disability Benefits You might also be eligible for short-term disability and/or long-term disability benefits if your employer offers them and if they were something you signed up for. These benefits can equal from 40% to 60% of your former salary. Ask your HR representative about this, or talk directly with the disability plan provider to get more information about eligibility requirements. Each plan can vary. If Youve Left Your Job Youll also want to talk with a qualified disability attorney if you developed a health care concern while you were employed and later resigned because of it. An attorney might be able to get you approved for work-related disability benefits even if youve left your job. Repetitive injuries from work tasks, unreported accidents, and harmful work conditions can affect your wellbeing months after leaving a job. Life-Long Disabilities Your next course of action is to apply for permanent disability benefits if your condition developed over a period of time through no fault of your employer, or if youve been diagnosed with a life-long disability. You can apply through your local Social Security office. The process is long- it can take up to two years to be approved for benefits in some cases. Youll have to rely on your personal savings and assets in the meantime, as well as the support of friends and family. The good news is that benefits are retroactive to the date you originally applied. You can expect a lump sum payment after youre approved, followed by regular monthly payments thereafter. Submit your application for Social Security disability insurance as soon as possible. You can use an online form, or visit your local Social Security office. Call 1-800-772-1213 toll-free to make an appointment. WHAT YOU'LL NEED Youll need certain information to fill out the application for benefits. Make sure you take this information with you if you apply in person:Medical records: Know what you have been diagnosed with, the date you were diagnosed, and your physician information.Workers’ compensation records: You can request this through your employer’s HR office.Names and birthdates of all your household members: You might be eligible for additional benefits based on family size.Checking and savings account numbers: These will be used to verify income eligibility for SSI benefits and for direct deposit of benefits.Proof of U.S. citizenship status and your address: Your U.S.-issued driver’s license and birth certificate should suffice.List of any prescription medication you take for your condition: You might be eligible for medical coverage under Medicare.Your detailed work history for the last 15 years: The Social Security Administration will want to know about your jobs, tasks, and your ability to work. Youll receive notification of a time for a hearing. Youll meet with a Social Security case manager who will review your documentation with you, ask you for additional information if needed, and schedule a follow-up visit if necessary. Now the waiting game begins. You should be notified in about 45 days of the status of your case. Don’t be shocked if your initial request is denied, because 70% of cases are denied the first time. You can appeal if necessary, and you should retain a Social Security disability attorney to represent you the second time around.

How the Hiring Decision Is Really Made

How the Hiring Decision Is Really Made How the Hiring Decision Is Really Made Theres a lot of information out there about how a hiring decision is made. In reality, it all comes down to whether or not you will make the hiring managers job easier.   What Managers Want to Know About You The better equipped you are to tackle the tasks of the job, the more time and money you will save your manager.   Every potential manager you interview with is asking themselves the following questions:   Do you have the basic skills required for the job?How much experience have you had doing the work required for this job? What advanced skills do you have that are relevant to this job?How much training will you need? How quickly will you be able to work independently? Will you be able to train others? If You Are a Good Fit for the Team and the Culture Generally, the better you fit in with the team, and the corporate culture, the more likely you are to be hired. The hiring manager knows that if youre a good fit with the team, he or she wont have to spend time resolving personal conflicts between you and others on the team. A good team fit means youll likely mesh with established patterns and procedures and, ultimately, help improve production. Managers also have to ask, are you a good fit with the overall  company culture? Your Cost-Value Ratio Every hiring manager has a budget that covers the salary and benefits of a new hire and possible adjustments to the salaries of other team members if youre hired. If the hiring manager can hire you at the targeted salary, or below, he or she can stay within budget and not waste time and energy making adjustments. All managers will question how quickly youll be able to get up to full productivity. If you require a salary above the target, the hiring manager may be able to accommodate you, but she has to figure out how to make adjustments. Another variable is whether or not you require additional benefits such as an extra week of vacation. Even if the hiring manager can arrange that vacation time, he will need to take the time and make an effort negotiating those accommodations. It doesnt mean you shouldnt ask for the salary and benefits you feel you deserve. The hiring manager may decide you are worth the cost and effort, but be aware that they may impact the hiring decision. Every potential manager you interview with is ranking candidates based on what theyll cost, in both time and money: Are your salary requirements at or below the target for the position? Are you requesting any benefits beyond the companys norm? Will hiring you require the hiring manager to make adjustments to any other team members salary? Will hiring you require any additional effort on the hiring managers part to justify any additional expense?Does the hiring manager believe you are worth the additional cost? Outside Pressures No hiring manager operates in a vacuum. The manager has a boss that he or she reports to and has to please. The position the hiring manager is filling will probably  interact with other departments in the company, and the managers of those departments may have preferences for the kind of person being hired. Human Resources (HR) is also a factor because they may be concerned about government rules and regulations regarding the proper procedure surrounding hiring practices. If hiring you causes any problems with any outside influences,  then its less likely youll be offered the job, despite your skills or background. Every potential manager you interview with is ranking candidates based on whether the new hire will cause  problems outside their control: Will hiring you cause any problems with the hiring managers boss? What other departments will you work with and do any of them have preferences that you dont meet?Is hiring you going to cause any problems with the companys hiring practices that will take time or effort on the managers part to explain or justify? Will hiring you cause any problems with government rules or regulations that the company will have to deal with and the hiring manager will have to spend time to support? A hiring manager is going to hire the candidate he believes will do the most to make his or her job the easiest. Every manager has more work than they can handle and while they recognize  recruiting, screening, and hiring new employees is a critical part of their job, theyll always opt for the candidate who will do the most to help them out by making their job easier in all aspects.

How to plan a successful team offsite or retreat

How to plan a successful team offsite or retreat How to plan a successful team offsite or retreat Taking time out of the office is essential for team development - it’s a unique opportunity to get together in person to discuss strategy and evaluate progress.Unfortunately, there’s some confusion between a team offsite and a fun team outing. That’s why  some articles  say that corporate team building is a waste of time and money.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! But there’s a difference between getting your team together to have fun or to improve how it is working. Some executives believe that merely taking people out of the office - with the help of alcohol and fun activities - will solve all the problems. There’s nothing wrong with having fun. But, improving team performance needs more than bonding - it requires understanding and hard work too.An effective team offsite can create positive and long-lasting effects. Here are some suggested best practices.Differe nces between Team Building and Team DevelopmentThe term ‘team building’ has become more prominent in recent years as organizations want to promote a happy environment. It’s mostly associated with bonding together and improving how everyone gets along. In most of the cases, it’s simply about getting away from the office to enjoy time together. Most team building activities are fun - somewhat superficial - and create a social context to foster deeper relationships. But, if not managed well, team building activities  can backfire - they can bring out hostility and competition between individuals.Team development,  on the other hand, is about taking time to explore and unleash the team’s full potential - it raises self-awareness and focuses on improvement.Team building retreats are good to build morale and camaraderie but don’t necessarily improve team performance in the long-term. A team development offsite, on the other hand, requires people to work, not just to have fu n. It delivers a more intentional, change-oriented, and lasting impact to your organization. Both can be enjoyable and complement each other. For this article, I use the terms ‘team offsite’ or ‘team retreat’ to refer to team development. What Are the Reasons to Hold an  Offsite? There are various motives for why teams want to spend time together. Most companies struggle to find time to take a ‘day off’ to work on what matters, while everyday problems keep piling up. As the saying goes,  we don’t have time to do it right the first time but find time to do it twice (or thrice).Based on our experience having facilitated hundreds of sessions, we’ve found that a team offsite is particularly useful for: Building Trust and Collaboration:  Fear is a pervasive emotion in the workplace - 7 out of 10 employees silence their suggestions, thoughts, and ideas. This is one of the most often reasons why companies have an offsite - they want to build a safe space to regain trust and communication. Strategy and Alignment:  Offsites are invaluable for solving big problems or addressing long-term strategies. They allow leaders to spend time together collaborating, learning, and discovering new territories. By shaping the future together, people are more engaged and aligned. Learning and Experimenting:  Whether you are trying to avoid lengthy approval mechanisms, increase accountability, improve self-awareness, or make meetings more efficient, an offsite provides a safe space for people to learn and experiment with new ways of working. Tackle large initiatives:  Taking time out of the office is a very effective way to focus on projects that require attention. With fewer interruptions and having the key participants in the same room, your team can make much more progress than when at the office. Team Awareness:  Reflecting on collective behaviors, mindset, and achievement helps identify blind spots, areas of opportunities as well as build on what’s working for the team. Providing feedback and addressing tensions help the team accelerate performance. What are you trying to  solve? Before embarking into a team offsite make sure you define a clear objective for the session. I usually ask clients for three goals and then to prioritize them using the following categories: critical, important, and nice-to-have.It’s also important to agree on expectations and what the ideal outcome should look like. The more clear and focused the goal, the more effective the offsite will be. As author Stephen Covey famously said,  Ã¢€œThe main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.”Be ready to reframe the  problemUnderstanding the problem is the key to designing the right experience. However, keep your mind open. One of the key benefits of an offsite is that the session itself helps to reframe the problem - the real tensions become more evident as the team is solving them. Most of the times, the initial assessment differs from the real problem. The pre-work phase (interviews, surveys, etc.) provide valuable insights to better understand whatâ €™s going on and bridge the gap between what management sees and what the team members observe.Acknowledge there’s a  problemMost senior executives tend to minimize people or cultural issues - they are either too detached from the frontline or idealize the reality of their organization. This is hard for many executives to accept. I usually notice certain skepticism among leaders - their teams are more excited about the prospect of an offsite, but CEOs tend to be more hesitant. One of the reasons is that team retreats open many doors - not everyone is ready to listen or to feel exposed. However, tensions won’t disappear  because they are not addressed - they actually get worse.Plan Your Team Offsite  AheadWho owns  it?A team offsite involves a lot of planning and people. Usually, either leaders want to be in charge, or they delegate the authority to one person or small team. Our recommendation lies in the middle.A diverse small group - the leader included - should be involved in the key design phases and approval - you don’t want to kick off a session and realize that key people feel blindsided or that the CEO doesn’t agree with the goals or agenda.Pre-workPreparing the team is vital without putting too much additional load on their shoulders. Sending out some pre-reads or exercises can help create curiosity.Usually, we perform a survey to assess the tensions and have some one-on-one interview with diverse team members to get a broad perspective of mindset, moods, and dig deeper into the tensions. The flowMost team retreats are very demanding in terms of attention and energy. It’s key to mix activities to manage emotions and depth. For example, after an intense brainstorm, a stoke can relax people. Or a short guided meditation can bring some tranquility after activities that were more challenging or made people feel vulnerable.Having a clear agenda with planned activities and break is critical, but facilitators must be flexible to adapt to what’ s happening at the moment. This means probably spending more time in one section and sacrificing other portions - the outcome is more important than rigidly sticking to the agenda. To keep the energy flowing, group dynamics must change - switch partners, alternate sitting and standing activities, mix reflection with creative activities or switch the group settings.Plan small breaks for recovery, decompression, and bio needs. Make room for debriefing the activities - discuss learnings and address tensions.End on a high note. Review learnings and commitments. Create  a celebratory team ritual  to wrap up the session in a good mood.Write a team  contractImproving team performance requires both individual and collective commitments. Signing a team contract is a fun and effective way to carve those in stone. Each person adds two post-its. One with a behavior s/he commits to improving; the other, with one behavior s/he expects the team to provide. Then the entire team signs the contract .The follow-up is everythingDocument the process. Make sure to take lots of photos, capture insights and decisions - assign one person to consolidate everything after the session.Every offsite must include a concrete action plan with clear responsibilities. Set goals in the  one day, one week, one month  format (one day being the first day the team is back in the office).Set up a follow-up meeting (30â€"60 minutes) to monitor performance and identify tensions - ideally, one week after the offsite. The facilitator should ensure the team is on track with commitments, keep the momentum going, and address new tensions associated with implementing new practices or habits.A Team Offsite Allows ExperimentationBuild a Safe  SpaceThe whole process should be designed to make people feel comfortable to be themselves and take interpersonal risks. Of course, facilitation is key to create a safe space. But, every step sends a signal.Transparency and clear communication build trust. Share the pur pose and desired outcome ahead of the offsite - if it’s meant to solve a particular issue, make it explicit, don’t sugarcoat the problem.Make sure to keep pre-interviews or surveys confidential. I strongly recommend the results are shared during the session, in front of the entire team. When management sees the findings first, it creates the impression that results can be filtered or manipulated.Everyone plays with the same  rulesI can’t stress this enough; leaders are part of the team. Thus, part of the problem. Don’t behave like others have an issue, but you don’t. Everyone has to be open to challenge and improve their mindsets and behaviors - leaders included.I’ve seen many CEOs being an observer rather than an active participant. People are watching - your behavior can encourage or discourage them. Model the behavior you want them to practice. If you expect people to be more candid or creative, start by embracing your own vulnerability first. Also, set up the room to ensure  titles don’t get in the way  of honest conversations. The benefits of external facilitationCalling out certain behaviors or encouraging people to participate more, for example, become less personal when done by a third party. External facilitation provides a neutral perspective too.Unfortunately, not everyone in a team is trained in effective facilitation - running a training workshop, and an offsite are two different animals. An employee may bring his/her own biases to the session.Lastly, external facilitators can share tools and learnings from working with multiple teams across various organizations.Encourage ParticipationEnsuring everyone is listened - especially the  voices of quiet people - will increase participation. Senior executives, loud people, and men, in particular, tend to be more outspoken and inhibit or influence other participants’ thoughts.Clear ground rules, facilitation, and specific methods - like conversation turn-taking - are key to avoid so meone from taking over. What Type of Offsite Is Right for  You?There are different types of team retreats depending on the challenges you are facing. This matrix will help you choose the right one.“Reflection” versus “Transformation:”  The first type is about a deeper understanding of the team’s mindset and behaviors - to reflect on performance and identify growth opportunities. The second type is when a more significant transformation is needed either at a team or organizational level.“Crisis” versus “Opportunity:”  The first is about solving urgent matters to unblock team performance (or even guarantee its survival). The latter is about focusing on strategic conversations and longer-term issues.1. Team Stabilization:Think of this as the ER for a team. Toxic behaviors, frictions, and lack of trust are bleeding a team to death. You can’t make any improvements until you stabilize the team first.A Team Stabilization offsite helps rebuild trust and builds hope.2. Te am  Timeout:A halt in the game can dramatically change the result of a match. Or your business goals for that matter. Taking a timeout is critical for a team to reflect on what’s working (or not), experiment with new ways of working, or even reset their mindset.A Team Timeout offsite provides a space for reflection and continuous improvement.3. Team  Reboot:Both Team Stabilization and Team Reboot are perfect when there’s an urgent need to change. The difference is that, in this particular situation, the team is underperforming, but hasn’t reached high levels of toxicity or distrust.A Team Reboot offsite is like resetting the operating system of your team.4. Innovation Session:Its purpose is to focus on designing what’s next. A team gets out of the office to address big-picture issues - removing distractions and short-term mentality is critical. An Innovation offsite is perfect to generate new ideas and solve current problems or identify new opportunities.Team Offsite Logisti csFrequency Teams should have an offsite at least once a year. In our experience, companies that hold them every six or four months, build a better cadence and momentum than those that do it every 12 months.Duration For a regular team offsite, one day is usually enough. To address more complex issues or to solve a problem, you might need 2 to 3 days.Food Don’t underestimate the value of good food. People are expecting something better than what they get at regular meetings. Also, a team offsite is very demanding. Study says people over 40 could excel in a 3-day work week

Study says people over 40 could excel in a 3-day work week Study says people over 40 could excel in a 3-day work week It’s Monday, which means there is a good chance you are struggling to be productive right now and/or keep your eyes open. Tomorrow will be a little better, but not much, and Wednesday will be spent planning your weekend. Then by the time Friday rolls around, you will be totally checked out so the only day you probably really got any work done is Thursday. OK, this is an exaggeration but you get it. Well, good news if you are over 40-years-old. According to a new study, a three-day workweek could be in your future. The study,  published in the Melbourne Institute Worker Paper series,  followed  3,000 male and 3,500 female volunteers. The researchers concluded that a  25-hour workweek is the optimal amount of time for workers over 40 to be successfully productive, as it is during this time period that cognitive functioning hits its peak.“For working hours up to around 25 hours a week, an increase in working hours has a positive impact on cognitive functioning. However, when working hours exceed 25 hours per week, an increase in working hours has a negative impact on cognition,” the researchers wrote. The cognitive functioning tests  included having the subjects read text backward, read words aloud, and match numbers and letters under time pressure.Workers are pushing back their retirementsWith more countries pushing back the retirement age, this is definitely something interesting to consider.  In the U.S. the average age of retirement is 66 years old.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects about 42 million workers in the labor force will be age 55 and older by 2026.“Many countries are going to raise their retirement ages by delaying the age at which people are eligible to start receiving pension benefits. This means that more people continue to work in the later stages of their life,” study  co-author and Keio University professor Colin McKenzie told  The Times. “The degree of intellectual stimulation may depend on working hours. Work can be a double -edged sword, in that it can stimulate brain activity, but at the same time long working hours can cause fatigue and stress, which potentially damage cognitive functions.”Recently a company in New Zealand called Perpetual Guardian tested out a four-day workweek for two months and had very positive results.  They found that their 240 employees reported greater productivity, as well as work-life balance, and experienced less stress. With more studies like this coming out a shorter workweek may come sooner rather than later.

New Guidelines for Pressure Boundary and Bolted Joint Assembly

New Guidelines for Pressure Boundary and Bolted Joint Assembly New Guidelines for Pressure Boundary and Bolted Joint Assembly In 2010, ASME Standards Certification published a much expanded edition of the standard reference, PCC-1-2010 Guidelines for Pressure Boundary Bolted Joint Assembly replaces the first, 2000 edition. The new publication reflects advances in gasket technology, bolting assembly procedures, and calculation methods. Safety from Lessons Learned Since PCC-1s original release concern arose over incidents of bolted joint leakage, some involving personnel injury, that could have been avoided with relatively minor changes to assembly procedures. PCC-1-2010 incorporates new recommendations based on this experience. For example in section 13.0 Joint Pressure and Tightness Testing, a caution was added on the use of temporary gaskets used during pressure and tightness testing. The revision also recommends that gaskets not be reused. Section 7.0, Lubrication of Working Surfaces, was updated to include a recommendation that bolts be checked for free-running nuts during bolt lubrication. This was based on experience indicating that relatively small imperfections on the bolt or nut thread can significantly affect the obtained bolt load when tightening the joint. Another addition, that excessive paint be removed before assembling the joint, was based on the observation that excessive paint thickness between the nut and back of the flange could cause joint leakage due to loss of the bolt load as the paint degrades. Tensioning a flange: By including industry best practice, the standard achieves improvements in assembly efficiency and joint integrity.Filling in the Knowledge Gaps Previous guidelines for flange face flatness were based on manufacturing tolerances and often did not reflect what practical experience. Nor did they address imperfections in the flange facing. In practice, the acceptable imperfections for a flange facing depend on the type of gasket. Appendix D, Guidelines for Allowable Gasket Contact Surface Flatness and Defect Depth, describe flatness limits based on compression the gasket experiences during assembly. The appendix also covers acceptable levels of local flange facing imperfections, which depend on the materials used. The revision of Appendix E: Flange Joint Alignment Guidelines incorporates a similar departure from older standards. Alignment guidelines for PCC-1-2010 were completely rewritten to focus on geometry-based limits with associated alignment-force limits. Similarly, Appendix M: Hardened Washer Usage Guideline and Purchase Specification, was created to fill a need for a hardened washer specification that suited bolted joint applications for pressure vessels and piping. Improved Integrity, Less Effort PCC-1 was updated to improve joint assembly productivity by allowing graphite to remain in the flange surface finish grooves after cleaning when using graphite-faced gaskets. This reduces the effort associated with preparing the joint for reassembly. Even greater productivity gains are possible through the alternative tightening procedures outlined in Appendix F: Alternative Flange Bolt Assembly Patterns. Since the initial release of PCC-1, considerable effort was made to demonstrate that faster assembly methods can achieve joint integrity equal to or better than those obtainable through older methods. The theory behind these improvements is the use of an appropriate pattern for the gasket being employed and by increasing the bolt load at a much more rapid rate than the legacy method. Pattern passes employing multiple tools have been included to reflect this common industry practice. Answering Age-Old Questions Engineers working with pressure vessel and piping bolted joints often face the question of which assembly bolt is more appropriate. Appendix O: Assembly Bolt Load Selection outlines two methods of determining the appropriate assembly bolt load for a given joint. The other significant conundrum involves diagnosing cause(s) of leaks. The new Appendix P: Guidance on Troubleshooting Flanged Joint Leakage Incidents covers leakage assessment through examination of the original joint configuration, assembly history, operating conditions, and condition of the joint and gasket subsequent to joint disassembly. The appendix provides guidance, checklists that guide users through joint leakage investigations, and contains a sample Flanged Joint Leak Report and additional considerations for common flange design issues and potential resolutions. Training and Certification The lack of standardized qualifications for bolted joint assemblers has been identified as an issue by many in industry and is a leading cause of joint leakage due to poor assembly practices. To improve the status quo, a significant revision to the existing PCC-1 Appendix A was drafted and is under consideration. The proposed new Appendix A outlines requirements for creation and administration of training and assessment programs for certifying bolted joint assemblers, and suggests minimum course content for that certification. ASME PCC-1-2010 represents a step change in the level of detail provided for guidance on bolted joint assembly and guide continued improvement in the integrity of bolted flanged joints. [Adapted from Assembling Knowledge by Warren Brown, Clyde Neely, and Steven J. Rossi, for Mechanical Engineering, July 2010.] The lack of standardized qualifications for bolted joint assemblers has been identified as an issue by many in industry and is a leading cause of joint leakage due to poor assembly practices.
